‘Life in Squares’ or in vintage glasses?

Wednesday, September 9th, 2015

Recent BBC2 drama mini-series Life in Squares was not received with huge acclaim however we noted it for the vintage frames.  Both the character of Lytton Strachey and that of the mature Virginia Woolf wear appropriate eyewear of the time.  For Lytton’s small metal oval gold frames try the OVAL ‘Olly‘ Gold.  Virginia’s bold round glasses are the spitting image of the Anglo American ‘116‘.

Indian Summers

Tuesday, March 17th, 2015

Set in 1930s India, during the final years of British colonial rule, Channel 4’s Indian Summers is a stunning visual feast.  As you would expect, the period costuming is wonderful and includes round NHS style glasses for the character Eugene Mathers.

MasterChef 2015

Saturday, March 14th, 2015

New series of MasterChef, new glasses for Gregg Wallace.

Week 1 contestant Tony has already impressed and we think he could go all the way, maybe it’s the specs?  They are very similar to the classic Anglo American 406 seen here.

Castles in the Sky

Tuesday, September 9th, 2014

Last week’s BBC 2 historical drama Castles in the Sky was the wonderful telling of the invention of the radar which was so important in the Battle of Britain.  Starring Eddie Izzard as spectacle-wearing inventor Robert Watson-Watt, actors Alex Jennings and Julian Rhind-Tutt also wore glasses appropriate to the 1940s as Henry Tizzard and Albert Percival Rowe.

Mr Sloane

Thursday, June 12th, 2014

Will Mr Sloane ever get his life together?  Followers of Sky Atlantic’s new series Mr Sloane will be tuning in Friday night at 9pm to find out.  While eagerly anticipated this romantic comedy, created by Robert B. Weide and starring Nick Frost, won’t appeal to everyone as Mr Sloane’s antics are totally cringe-worthy!  True to character, slightly behind the times, Mr Sloane wears glasses of the 1950s while the rest of the world is speeding into the swinging sixties.  Here are our picks that best match his classic retro 50s and metal combination eyewear choices.

Breathless

Wednesday, October 9th, 2013

We like 1960s drama Breathless where  Joanna Page stars as Lily Enderbury an ex nurse now married to the hospital’s anaesthetist.  She wears classic upswept glasses of the 1950s/60s.

Masters of Sex

Sunday, October 6th, 2013

Masters of Sex follows the relationship between Dr. William Masters (Michael Sheen) and Virginia Johnson (Lizzy Caplan), the couple who gave birth to the sexual revolution. We have already glimpsed some fantastic period glasses similar to the Saville Row ‘Panto Gold Curl’ and the Upswept ‘Glenda’.

Monty Don’s round glasses

Saturday, August 24th, 2013

That’s right, Monty Don was spotted on BBC Gardener’s World last night in the shed wearing glasses identical to the Savile Row round padded Tortoiseshell  or Chestnut frame seen here.  His even have curl sides which are available from Roope Vintage as well!

Top of the Lake director in stylish specs

Thursday, August 22nd, 2013

Have you seen BBC Two drama Top of the Lake?  We spotted director Jane Campion, in a film about the making of the TV miniseries, in some very stylish glasses and sunglasses along with her co creator Gerard Lee.

Campion wears glasses similar in shape to the Anglo American175‘.

Gerard Lee’s glasses are like the very traditional Saville Row.
