Celebrating 50 years of ‘I have a dream’ speech

Friday, August 23rd, 2013

This month marks the 50th Anniversary of Martin Luther King’s ‘I have a dream speech’ which was influential in the fight for civil rights for African Americans.  Here is an iconic photo of the speech and we notice a figure standing just behind Martin Luther King wearing glasses in the popular style of the 1960s.

For this 60s style try the Black Eyewear ‘Erroll‘.

Malcolm X, another civil rights leader, also wore glasses that have become iconic and associated with the style of the 1960s.  Our 1960s metal combination frames are named MX in his honour.

Tennis Champs in Retro Glasses

As Wimbledon comes to a close we look at two tennis legends, Arthur Ashe and Billie Jean King, who wore fantastic glasses.

Billie Jean, who has worn glasses throughout her adult life, is perhaps best known for winning the ‘The Battle of the Sexes’ match against Bobby Riggs in 1973.  She has been an amazing advocate of women in tennis.  Here she best remembered wearing fantastic upswept frames such as these.

Arthur Ashe is the only black man to have ever won the men’s singles title at Wimbledon, which he won defeating Jimmy Connors in 1975.  He is considered to be one of the greatest players of all time, winner of a Grand Slam Singles title.  After suffering from heart disease and undergoing two surgeries Ashe contracting HIV from a blood transfusion.  Later in his life he did much to bring AIDS sufferers to the attention of the world.  This great 1960s style frame is similar to those he wore on court.
