Vintage glasses in film The Help

Friday, October 21st, 2011

Set to release in the UK on the 26th October, The Help is a film based on Kathryn Stockett’s  book of the same name.  Set in 1960’s Mississippi, Skeeter Phelan an aspiring journalist decides to interview the town’s African American maids and write a book detailing the day to day hardships they face taking care of prominent southern families.  While the film has divided the opinion of American audiences the feel of the 1960’s is undeniable and includes some fantastic cat eye sunglasses and upswept glasses.

Howl

Friday, March 11th, 2011

Going to the cinema this weekend?  Howl is a must see.  Named after the poem written by Allen Ginsberg in 1955 the film consists of three strands: Ginsberg talking about his life and work, the obscenity trial of the work, and an animation that echoes the surreal style of the poem which is thought to be one of the great works of the Beat Generation.  Set in 1957 San Francisco it is no surprise great 50s style frames are worn throughout by the stellar cast.

Nigel Slater’s memoir Toast was recently adapted for TV and shown on BBC1.  Set in 1960s Britain the drama featured iconic eyewear of the period.

His beloved mother wore subtly upswept frames while his detested stepmother was more flamboyant in her choice of dramatic cat eye glasses.

Even Nigel’s father, played here by Ken Stott, sports 1950s style frames similar to our Retro 1D TTG.
