Saturday, September 22nd, 2012

It has been exactly one week since Roope Vintage exhibited at Goodwood Revival 2012.  This year’s festival broke all the records and was a sell-out event with a record number of attendees!  Motor racing hero Dan Gurney was honoured in style and celebrities Ewan McGregor, Kim Cattrall and Rowan Atkinson were spotted amongst the motor racing enthusiasts.  We had a great time too and it was lovely to catch up with familiar faces we haven’t seen for a while.

Tennis Champs in Retro Glasses

Saturday, July 2nd, 2011

As Wimbledon comes to a close we look at two tennis legends, Arthur Ashe and Billie Jean King, who wore fantastic glasses.

Billie Jean, who has worn glasses throughout her adult life, is perhaps best known for winning the ‘The Battle of the Sexes’ match against Bobby Riggs in 1973.  She has been an amazing advocate of women in tennis.  Here she best remembered wearing fantastic upswept frames such as these.

Arthur Ashe is the only black man to have ever won the men’s singles title at Wimbledon, which he won defeating Jimmy Connors in 1975.  He is considered to be one of the greatest players of all time, winner of a Grand Slam Singles title.  After suffering from heart disease and undergoing two surgeries Ashe contracting HIV from a blood transfusion.  Later in his life he did much to bring AIDS sufferers to the attention of the world.  This great 1960s style frame is similar to those he wore on court.
